Reuters/Ipsos Poll Shows Bernie Ahead 5 Nationally: Leading Among Dems by 1, Independents by 16

The newest Reuters/Ipsos poll, released Thursday, shows Bernie Sanders pulling ahead of Hillary Clinton among Democrats nationally, leading 49-48. It’s the first time this poll has had Sanders leading.

For the national Democratic poll numbers, 849 registered voters were surveyed, including 635 Democrats and 147 independents. The poll does not say what the affiliation is of the remainder. Sanders leads 47-42 overall, 49-48 among registered Democrats, and 45-29 among Independents.

An interesting side note to this poll is that they polled general election matchups for Hillary Clinton against all current GOP candidates, but did not do the same for Bernie Sanders. In other words, they were fine to include Ted Cruz and John Kasich, two candidates who are actually further behind their front-runner in their respective delegate counts than Bernie Sanders is. I’ll chalk that up to a mere oversight, but you’d think next time Reuters/Ipsos would want to include those matchups for the candidate that is actually leading their own polling.

The poll was conducted from April 9-13. In total, 1680 people were polled. Margins of error are 2.7 overall, 4.1 for the sample of Democrats, and 8.1 for the sample of independents.
