If dreams were lightning and thunder were desire,
This old house would've burnt down a long time ago.
Those are some lines from Angel From Montgomery, a brilliant song, pregnant with memory and meaning. Having once lived in Montgomery, it has layers of meaning for me.
What I love about John Prine is his simple yet profound humanity. I think it is, in some powerful sense, ineffable. But unmistakable.
x YouTube VideoMy recent travels abroad have included a fair amount of explaining what Americans have been busily explaining all over the world – that shit ain't me.
We are not well thought of in much of the world, and understandably so, considering: Iraq, Abu Ghraib, depleted uranium, Guantanamo, aggressive war, extraordinary rendition (or kidnapping), torture, greed, drones, collateral damage, war crimes, regime change, gangster bankers, the humanitarian nightmare in the middle east, Trump. And then comes the neoliberal crap, some version of which is prominent in most any South American nation, in one form or another. We are known serial trouble-makers throughout the continent. And that ain't the only one.
And all of that pre-TPP.
Our government has tainted us all, to say the least. We are compelled to explain, when traveling abroad, that we are as horrified as any other at what's been done in the name of the people of the United States of America. Either that or suffer the distaste or antipathy that are the just desserts of anyone backing such policies.
I mean, my God, look what our government has done.
We may not be to blame for all that's been done in our names but we are to blame for letting them get away with it.
We need to change the tragic trajectory of our government and our species before it's too late. We need to bring the focus back to people and planet.
x YouTube VideoWe need to turn things around.
That's what we're trying to do.
