Hillary Clinton attacked Donald Trump’s statements to the NRA about gun control Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale.

“Just yesterday [Friday] at the NRA annual convention Donald Trump said in his very first hour as president — heaven forbid — he would overturn President [Barack] Obama’s action to strengthen background checks,” Clinton said.

Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee, spoke at the Trayvon Martin Foundation’s Circle of Mothers event held for mothers who have lost a child to gun violence. Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, has endorsed Clinton.

“Something is wrong when so many young people just starting their lives are dying …,” Clinton said at the event held at the Embassy Suites hotel. “This election gives us a chance of trying to make it right.”

Trump wants to do away with what little we have gained in terms of background checks?   The NRA needs to be reigned in, not pacified.

“Despite all the political noise we are actually united on this issue,” Clinton said. “The vast majority of Americans support comprehensive background checks. … This isn’t a matter of building public support. We already have it. It’s a matter of making elected officials do their jobs to keep our children safe.”

Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, told the NRA this week that Clinton was “heartless” for backing restrictions on gun ownership. He claimed she would try to “abolish” the Second Amendment through the U.S. Supreme Court.  PolitiFact ruled a similar claim by Trump False because Clinton has repeatedly said she wants to protect the right to bear arms while enacting measures to prevent gun violence.

The NRA endorsed Trump who supported an assault weapons ban in 2000 but opposes restrictions now. He has also vowed to get rid of gun-free zones at schools.

“That idea isn’t just way out there,” Clinton said Saturday night. “It’s dangerous … Parents, teachers and schools should have a right to keep guns out of classroom just like Donald Trump does at many of his hotels by the way. This is somebody running for president of the United States of America, a country facing a gun violence epidemic, and he is talking about more guns in our schools, he is talking about more hatred and division in our streets, even more nuclear weapons in the world. That’s no way to keep us safe.”

Insane.  Guns in the classrooms?  Not in any school my daughters are going to attend, I tell you that.

Before her speech, Clinton spoke with 60 mothers who lost a child to gun violence. It cost a minimum $1,500 to attend.

It cost a minimum of $1,500 to attend this “Circle of Mothers” event?  Where did that money go?  Hillary’s coffers?  Why, no.  These were donations that went directly to the Trayvon Martin foundation.

The Sun Sentinel reports:

Clinton decries 'Trump's America' in Fort Lauderdale speech

The Circle of Mothers group was founded by Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, who introduced Clinton to a crowd of about 200 people.

"This lady that I'm introducing has a vision, has a simple vision, because what other woman do you know who can go from being a first lady to being the president of the United States?" Fulton said. "Do you realize who we have sitting in this room?”

200 attendees times $1,500 a person = $300,000.  With this one appearance Hillary helped the Trayvon Martin foundation and the Circles of Mothers group raise $300,000 for their all-important work to raise awareness of and to stop gun-violence aimed at African-Americans, police-brutality related or otherwise.

Other women in attendance were also mothers of children who had died from gun violence.

"It takes a special kind of person to endure a loss like all of you and find a way to turn it into service," Clinton said.

Nearly two dozen tables adorned with purple tablecloths and flowers filled the reception room in a Fort Lauderdale hotel. A table of photos of people killed in gun incidents was flanked by images of Martin.

….

Saturday, Clinton stayed focused on Trump and did not mention Sanders.

"You know, running for president is hard," she said. "But it's nothing like what I have seen the mothers do. And what I have learned from everyone whom I have met. Your courage and your commitment and your leadership is inspirational to me."

Queen Thompson Brown, whose son Eviton was killed in Miami in 2006, spoke to the crowd before Clinton took the stage, emphasizing she was not advocating stripping people of their firearms.

"We're not here to take away your guns," said Brown, as Clinton looked up from a table in front of her. "We are here to promote common-sense gun laws."

Common-sene gun laws.  Not so hard, people.  An overwhelming majority of Americans already want that.

Hillary speaks my language.  Also, she is a great advocate, a partner, for these mothers who have gone through so much.   A Democratic Senate and a Democratic President who is going to strongly fight for tougher gun control measures, as well as a Liberal Supreme Court for the first time in four decades can make a big difference when it comes to better gun control measures for this country.   The entire industrialized world can do it, why can’t we?

Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update got in on this, mocking Trump for his stunning hypocrisy and “Etch a Sketch” on gun control issues:

SNL ridicules NRA endorsement of Trump: Obviously ‘they didn’t do a background check on him’

SNL’s Weekend Update devoted a substantial amount of time discussing all things Donald Trump on Saturday night, beginning with taking aim at the NRA’s recent endorsement of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Anchor Colin Jost ridiculed the endorsement, saying, “I assume they didn’t do a background check. If they had, they would have seen that when President Obama called for gun control in the wake of the Newtown shooting, Trump tweeted: ‘President Obama spoke for me and every American in his remarks in #Newtown Connecticut.'”

“He wrote hashtag Newtown,” Jost added, “but forgot to write #MightHaveToCompletelyChangeMyViewsIfIEndUpBeingARepublican.”

That led to a brilliant rant by Michael Che directed at the NRA’s accusation that Hillary Clinton wants to destroy the 2nd Amendment, with Che noting that “no one wants to take your guns away, except maybe a curious toddler which is why maybe Hillary Clinton is trying to prevent this.”

Kind of sad when SNL does better journalistic research and analysis on Trump than ACTUAL JOURNALISTS.
