DWS will resign as DNC chair, is immediately given a prominent role in Clinton campaign.

Thousands of emails from DNC officials were leaked earlier this week. Many of the e-mails indicate a bias for the Clinton campaign and against Bernie Sanders. The DNC is supposed to facilitate the primary, but remain neutral. The DNC charter tasks the chairperson with ensuring impartiality:

The Chairperson shall be responsible for ensuring that the national officers and staff of the Democratic National Committee maintain impartiality and evenhandedness during the Democratic Party Presidential nominating process.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is the chairperson of the DNC. Despite numerous attempts to shift the focus onto how the e-mails were leaked (Russians! Wikileaks! Socialists who honeymooned in Moscow!), the content of the e-mails claimed a major casualty. After discussions with the White House, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz announced she would be resigning as chairperson of the DNC at the end of the week.

Within hours of that announcement, the Clinton campaign released a statement saying Schultz would be given a prominent job in the Clinton campaign

I want to thank my longtime friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz for her leadership of the Democratic National Committee over the past five years. I am grateful to Debbie for getting the Democratic Party to this year’s historic convention in Philadelphia, and I know that this week’s events will be a success thanks to her hard work and leadership. There’s simply no one better at taking the fight to the Republicans than Debbie–which is why I am glad that she has agreed to serve as honorary chair of my campaign’s 50-state program to gain ground and elect Democrats in every part of the country, and will continue to serve as a surrogate for my campaign nationally, in Florida, and in other key states. I look forward to campaigning with Debbie in Florida and helping her in her re-election bid–because as President, I will need fighters like Debbie in Congress who are ready on day one to get to work for the American people.

Schultz was co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 primary campaign. Perhaps Schulz never truly left the Clinton campaign, even while she was officially charged with maintaining “impartiality” at the DNC. What’s that old saw about foxes and chickens?

Seriously though? Does the Clinton campaign know why Schultz had to resign? Because it became clear she was putting her “longtime friendship” with Hillary ahead of her duty as DNC chair. That does not come across in this statement. This seems more like the congratulatory letter you would get along with your performance-based bonus or promotion.
