First down ballot impact of Trump? Republican concedes control of San Diego City Council to Dems

Just a quick local story:  The San Diego City Council is ostensibly nonpartisan, but everybody knows the party affiliation of all the members.  The Council is currently 5-4 in favor of the Democrats, and the District 1 race between Barbara Bry (D) and Ray Ellis (R) was going to determine who controlled the Council.  Bry almost won it in the primary, and today Ellis announced that he was suspending his campaign.  In the article in the local paper linked below, Ellis said one of the reasons he was conceding was that Trump was going to be a drag on the race:

The money quote:

. . . it’s nearly impossible for a Republican in a Democratic-leaning district to insulate himself from the toxic seepage on the ballot.

Okay, this is a very local story that really only affects us living in the city of San Diego.  But we need to multiply this by thousands at the local level all across the country.  Sure, control of the Senate and the House is important, but a lot of policy that affects people occurs at the local level.  So even if you’re in a safe blue state or even a red one, keep working for your local candidates for city council, county board of supervisors, state legislature, school board, local judges, etc.  Not only will that help in turning local government blue, but it should help up the ballot as well.

Wow.  I thought this would be just a niche local story.  Thanks for the Rec List!
