How Low Will They Go? Clinton's Allies Smearing Bernie as Soviet Union "Sympathizer"

This is so far over the line that it is beyond decency. And it is done to aid Hillary Clinton by her allies. Oh, she will have deniability. But we see and we understand.

Sanders smeared as communist sympathiser as Clinton allies sling mud.

That’s the headline. From the story:

The dossier, prepared by opponents of Sanders and passed on to the Guardian by a source who would only agree to be identified as “a Democrat”, alleges that Sanders “sympathized with the USSR during the Cold War” because he went on a trip there to visit a twinned city while he was mayor of Burlington.

Similar “associations with communism” in Cuba are catalogued alongside a list of quotes about countries ranging from China to Nicaragua in a way that supporters regard as bordering on the McCarthyite rather than fairly reflecting his views.

Sanders has insisted on many occasions this year that his own philosophy of democratic socialism is very different from that of authoritarian regimes, and much more in keeping with the tradition of American reformers such as Franklin D Roosevelt.

There is a point at which Hillary may destroy the village to “save it” for herself.

Would you buy a used car from that woman?

A Democratic Party poster campaign in the 1960 Presidential election used the slogan "Would YOU buy a used car from this man?" together with a photo of Nixon, who later lost the election to Kennedy

At this point, I’m beginning to see a resemblance.

Update 1:

I was reminded in the comments by leu2500 about Bill Clinton’s visit to the Soviet Union years before during the height of the Cold War and the way in which Bush attacked Bill over it:

Published: October 8, 1992

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Oct. 7— President Bush tonight accused Gov. Bill Clinton of not telling the truth about his visit to Moscow as a student in the late 1960's and sharply criticized the Democratic nominee for demonstrating against the Vietnam War while he was studying in England.

Asked by Mr. King what he thought about Mr. Clinton visiting the Soviet Union while he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford in 1969, Mr. Bush seemed to choose his words carefully. He avoided any direct accusation but at the same time clearly conveyed the impression that he had suspicions and disapproved.

"I don't want to tell you what I really think, because I don't have the facts," he said. "But to go to Moscow one year after Russia crushed Czechoslovakia, not remember who you saw? I really think the answer is, level with the American people."

Mr. Clinton has said he visited Moscow for five days as part of a 40-day tour of European capitals that was part of his studies at Oxford. While he has spoken of the people with whom he met in other capitals, including Oslo, he has said he cannot recall those he met in Moscow.

Mr. Bush said: "You can remember who you saw in the airport in Oslo, but you can't remember who you saw in the airport in Moscow? I say level with the American people on the draft, whether you went to Moscow, how many demonstrations he led against his country from a foreign soil. Level, tell the truth and then let the American voters decide."

Tonight, the Clinton campaign said Mr. Bush's comments were a sign of desperation.

"It's a pathetic ploy by a desperate man who's been reading polls and not talking to real people," said George Stephanopoulos, the campaign's communications director. "He's more interested in what Bill Clinton did in 1969 than what the American people are going through in 1992."

A “sign of desperation.” A “pathetic ploy.”

Update II:

From LieperDestin, who along with Lysis (and Scan), are superstars on Daily Kos during this campaign with their Candidate News Posts every morning:

www.burlingtonfreepress.com/...

Hillary Clinton’s super PAC has tried to “flag” stories about Bernie Sanders, but the group does not want its name attached.

Daniel Wessel, Correct the Record press secretary, contacted the Burlington Free Press by email and phone to offer "off the record" story pitches.

The Free Press first attempted to contact Correct the Record officials while writing about the super PAC paying for a poll that named Clinton winner of the Nov. 14 Democratic debate in Des Moines, Iowa.

..

Wessel said that his organization prefers to be named only when speaking about Republican candidates. He offered to have his organization named in certain cases if the Free Press requested permission. The Free Press declined to agree to Wessel's terms.
