In what is surely a first, the Secret Service had to intervene to protect someone from a presidential candidate. Or, to be more precise, from the consequences of his hate-filled rhetoric.
The person was Katy Tur, a journalist for MSNBC. She tells her story in Marie Claire. Last fall she covered the Trump campaign for several months, and earned Trump’s extreme displeasure for reporting about protesters interrupting his speeches. He demanded an apology and she refused. So at a December rally Trump pointed out Tur to the crowd and said:
“What a lie. Katy Tur. What a lie it was. Third. Rate. Reporter. Remember that.”The crowd of Trump supporters turned so fiercely against her that Tur says the Secret Service had to protect her while she was walking to her car, simply to keep her safe.
